$25.00$45.00

Fun, interactive, African drumming and dance workshops.

Description

Come to the Toronto Hub and join an African drumming or dance workshop, or both.

Drumming and dance are great ways to stimulate the mind and body, build your coordination and stimulate your memory.

These fun, engaging and interactive workshops are open to beginners and people that have never drummed or danced before.

Plus we will be splitting proceeds with the Toronto Hub, so come along and support this wonderful local resource.

Introductory African Drumming Workshop

The drumming workshop will start with some fun rhythm activities, walk you through the basics of hand drumming with a djembe drum, and teach you a basic African rhythm.  By the end of the workshop you will be grooving with the group, even if you’ve never played before.

Introductory African Dance Workshop

The dance workshop will give you a glimpse of what African dancing is like.  We will start slow with a warm up, teach a few moves, and put them together in an arrangement.   All to live drumming!  Don’t be scared, since this is a beginner workshsop, we will be gentle.

When:   Saturday 17 May

  •  Drumming (1hr 15min):  1pm to 2:15pm
  • Dancing (1hr 15 min):  2:45pm to 4pm

Location:  Toronto Hub (Toronto Community Centenary Hub) – 97 The Boulevard Toronto, NSW 2283.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is at people with little or no drumming and/or dance experience, and beginner level drummers and dancers.

What to expect

In a beginner Djembe Alchemy workshop, we generally start by settling in, finding our spot and a drum and introducing ourselves.  We will warm up with some sort of rhythm activity, go over some basics of how to drum and then start to learn a traditional West African rhythm.  By the end we will be rocking the rhythm together with big smiles.  You will hopefully go home feeling happy, activated, energised but also with a sense of release.  During the session it’s guaranteed that you will forget about other life stresses.

In the dance workshop you can expect a work out!  Maybe not too intense since this is a beginner workshop, but it’s sure to get the blood pumping and to get your whole body activated.  You do the amount that’s right for you! Don’t be worries about fitness levels, lack of coordination or two left feet, this style of dance allows you adjust to the level that’s right for you whilst still pushing you to challenge and extend yourself.

Can I bring my own drum?

Yes, if you have a Djembe then please bring it to the drum workshop.  We recommend a drum that’s at least 50cm tall, that sits above your knees when placed on the ground between your legs in normal seated position on a standard chair.  It will be hard to properly participate and play properly with anything smaller.  Please contact us for a chat if you’d like to bring an alternative or smaller drum so that we can evaluate if it would be suitable.

We also have hire drums available.

Let’s get started!

So why wait? Join us for these workshops and experience the joy of African Djembe Drumming. Let the rhythm move you, let the rhythm move through you, and become a part of our vibrant drumming community.
