Description

TRIAL PASS

African Djembe Drumming Classes, try your first class before committing.

Are you interested in our Wednesday or Thursday evening classes but not sure if it’s for you?

We recommend trying a workshop if you’d like to try out drumming before committing to a full 9 week term of classes but obviously we all have a lot going on in life and either a workshop isn’t available or you aren’t.  So we are happy to offer enrolment in the first class as a trial!

How a first class trial works.

  • You purchase a Trial Pass (this product) and let us know which class you’d like to attend (either Wednesday or Thursday).  We mainly only offer this for the first week of classes as we don’t want to disrupt the flow of the class for other students, but happy to discuss particularly if you’ve drummed before.
  • Come along to the class, meet the team, smile, laugh, learn some basics and participate fully in the class.
  • If after the class, you decide that it’s not for you, then cool, no hard feelings, thanks for giving it a go and we wish you all the best on your search for a fun, groovy, community activity that’s good for your cognitive memory, focus and recall, improves your physical coordination, improves mental health, gets your heart pumping and blood flowing and connects you with a vibrant community of super cool people.
  • If you decide that you’d like to continue (and get all those benefits that you’re seeking) and enrol in the term, then you made the right decision, we honor your intellect and sound decision making skills so much that we will reduce your term cost by the amount paid for the Trial Pass (issued by voucher), so that the trial didn’t cost you any extra.

Obviously beginners are very welcome and hire drums are available.

Note other discounts such as Early Bird pricing will not be available with a Trial Pass however valid vouchers issued by us will be honored.

When and where?

Check the details of the term that you’re targetting but generally classes start at 6:30pm at Toronto Public School on Wednesday, and 6:15pm at Speers Point Public School on Thursday.  We will confirm with you after you purchase this Trial Pass.

What happens in a class and throughout the term?

At the beginning of the term we will have a brief introduction, run over the basics, some background and technique.  This is useful even if you’ve drummed before since revision and self analysis of your technique and playing style is critical to ongoing development, and a beginners mindset is always fundamental to learning.

Most classes start with some sort of warm up, maybe a game or body percussion or a djembe warmup to learn new phrases and develop endurance.

We then move on to the learning rhythms and will cover 2 to 3 rhythms throughout the term, dependent on the complexity of the rhythms.  Most of the rhythms we teach are traditional West African rhythms as taught to us by our teacher and Master drummer Bangoura Ke (Mohamed Bangoura).

When the schedule permits, we end the term with a combined end of term performance, bringing all the classes together and inviting friends and family to come and see what we have learnt, and to join us in the joy that is African drumming and rhythm.  This is a low key, relaxed and extremely fun event.

What resources will you provide and how can I practice?

Comprehensive online learning and practice resources!

For those that are keen for a bit (or lots) of practice, we have comprehensive online resources in our Learning Hub to assist and guide you.  Each rhythm we teach is documented and detailed in videos that you can play along with and learn from in our online Learning Hub.  This is great if you want a bit of revision or skip a class.

People join drumming classes for various reasons, some are keen to learn and develop their skills, some just want to connect with others, some just want an evening every week for themselves where they can zone out from the pressures of life.  We understand this and although home practice is highly recommended for your drumming development, it’s not essential and you can participate in classes without it.

What if I miss a class?

If you miss a class, then you can make it up at one of our other locations.  We generally try to keep the content aligned between locations, but there may be some difference, not to worry though regular practice is more important than the exact content, so we encourage you to take up this option.  If you can’t make it to your scheduled class then come to one of the others that week, if you can’t make those then come to two the following.

You can also go over all the material taught in class in the Learning Hub.

What are the benefits of group drumming?

Group drumming has been shown to:

  • Improve cognitive function and build new neural networks
  • Stimulate the memory centers in the brain
  • Improve coordination and mind body connection
  • Get the heart pumping and blood flowing

At the same time you will:

  • Meet new people and build social connection
  • Learn about West African rhythm and culture
  • Improve your sense of rhythm
  • Step out of your comfort zone
  • Take a holiday from the everyday pressures of life
  • Find your rythmic flow state

I’ve never drummed before, is this for me?

This class is accessible to drummers of all levels including beginners.  Never drummed before?  Although attending a beginner workshop prior is desirable, it’s not essential.  We will walk you through the basics and we have great online resources to help you start your journey.
