Here is a bit more about what to except at each one:

Beginner Djembe Drumming Workshop

Be introduced to the djembe, a versatile and exciting hand drum originating in West Africa and now played throughout the world.  We will teach you some basic techniques and then embark on learning a traditional West African rhythm.  This class is obviously beginner friendly, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be exciting, expect to be challenged,  expect to find a groove and expect to have fun.

Samba Percussion Workshop

Samba Frog is a well known institution in and around Newcastle. If you live in the area, and leave the house sometimes, then you have most likely seen them performing.  This Samba percussion workshop will be led by renowned local Samba guru Jean Stora.  Samba has Afro-Brazilian origins, it incorporates a range of instruments in a syncopated polyrythm and is often accompanied by dance.  It’s fun, energetic and a great way to get grooving and let off steam.

This workshop, we will of focused on Bahia Samba and demonstrate a range of instruments. There will be time for each instrument section to learn new patterns and/or improve acquired ones.

This is open to all levels but will best suit those with percussion experience.  For those without an instrument you are welcome to hire one of the Djembe Alchemy drums to participate.  See details about about Jean, drums/instruments and what to bring below.

Open/Intermediate Djembe Drumming Workshop

This djembe workshop will step it up a level from our beginners classes, demonstrating more complex patterns and solo phrases.  It’s an Open class, meaning that it’s available to all levels but expect the complexity and speed to be a bit higher since it is focussed at Intermediate level.  Although previous experience is highly desirable, if you’re a beginner with good sense of rhythm then you should be okay to follow along.

Dun Dun Dance Workshop

Ah the powerful, earthing depth of the African Dun Dun drum, and the uplifting vibe of African style dance moves, combine in this super fun, grounding and at the same time uplifting synergy of drumming and dance.  You will dance around the drum, as you tap out a simple rhythm accompanied by live djembe drumming.  It’s seriously a lot of fun and a great way to finish off the day.

Information about our guest teacher Jean Stora from SambaFrog.

Jean Stora began studying Brazilian Dance, Capoeira and Percussion back in 1990 with the Samba schools of San Francisco. Inspired by the intoxicating rhythms of Brazil and the thriving Latin and Caribbean arts community in San Francisco, he began dancing and drumming professionally with various local companies and bands, and in 1995 was chosen as San Francisco’s King of Carnaval.

Pursuing his interest in Latin American music, dance and culture, Jean travelled extensively in Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Mexico. He speaks Spanish and Portuguese along with English and his native tongue, French. Jean began performing and teaching Samba in Australia in 1996 before returning to San Francisco for several years where he enjoyed teaching packed classes at the Dance Mission studio.

In 2001 he taught Brazilian percussion and dance in France, performed at music festivals throughout the country with “Les Diables Bleus” and directed the Brazilian dance company, Cuisse de Samba.

In 2002, Jean established Dance Central studio in Sydney with the vision of bringing together various dance styles in one location. Now based in Newcastle since 2006, Jean performs with his multicultural dance and percussion ensemble known as SambaFrog. He brings with him his energetic and exhilarating brand of Brazilian dance and percussion.
